Industrial Problem Solving with Physics

IPSP: a unique sharing opportunity and a great growing experience for young researchers and companies.

Industrial Problem Solving with Physics (IPSP) is a one-week event organized by the Department of Physics, the Doctoral Programme in Physics and the Research Support and Knowledge Transfer Division of the University of Trento, in collaboration with Confindustria Trento and Polo Meccatronica - Trentino Sviluppo. Its aim is to boost the connection between the world of the physics research and the world of industry. The young researchers will have the chance to prove their skills, while the companies will experience the unique opportunity to collaborate with talented brains.

The fourth edition of IPSP (IPSP2017) will take place from July 17 to July 22, 2017, at the Polo Scientifico e Tecnologico "Fabio Ferrari" (Povo 2 Building), via Sommarive 9 - Povo, Trento (Italy).

  NEWS
July 10, 2017 The detailed program of the IPSP2017 week has been published

How does IPSP work?

3 companies and 30 brains (master course students, PhD students and research fellows) will be selected and for a week they will work in team finding solutions to the industrial problems submitted by the companies. Solutions will be achieved through inspiration, resources and facilities available at the Department of Physics.
IPSP aims at creating a bridge for the transfer of know-how and human resources between the University, in particular the Department of Physics, and the companies. The brains participating in the event will have the opportunity to tackle new practical challenges, exploiting the transversal skills achieved during the course of their studies. Participating companies, in turn, can obtain a solution to the submitted problem and experience an alternative problem solving strategy. At the same time, they can scout young and talented people for future collaborations.

IPSP: sharing results of IPSP2016 and launch of IPSP2017

On March 29, 2017 at the Electronic Laboratory of the Department of Physics, the results of the former edition were disclosed (see the proceedings). Following tradition, the event offered the chance to launch the new edition (IPSP2017) as well (see the event’s webpage).

Special attendees of the event, in addition to the Scientific committees of the former editions since 2014, were the Rector Paolo Collini, the Dean of the Department of Physics Lorenzo Pavesi, some representatives of IPSP’s institutional partners (Luca Arighi President of Sezione Metalmeccanica di Confindustria Trento and Flavio Tosi President of Trentino Sviluppo) and some IPSP2016 participants both of brains and companies (Arconvert, Bonfiglioli Mechatronic Research, Eurotex Filati, Saint-Gobain Sepr Italia).

Ready to rise to the IPSP2017 challenge, many new brains and companies took part in the event.

Companies application and registration

The guidelines for companies interested in participating in the event IPSP2017 are described in the Call for application - companies (available in the Download box, Italian version only).

In the Download box are also available some examples of problems and the final reports about the previous editions (Solved problems 2014, 2015 e 2016, Italian version only); the reports include a brief description of the participating companies, the problems and the solutions.

The procedure for taking part in IPSP2017 is divided into two distinct steps.

Step 1 - Application submission (May 25, 2017, 01.00 pm)

Companies have to submit their application via e-mail to ipsp2017@unitn.it. A memorandum summarizing all the documents required to complete the application submission is available in the Download box (Application notes for companies, Italian version only).

The submission deadline has been postponed to May 25, 2017, 01.00 pm, Italian time (previous deadline: May 18, 2017).

The applications received after the deadline will not be considered valid.

Step 2 - Company's logo dispatch, fee payment and registration (June 27, 2017 and June 29, 2017)

By June 22, 2017 (previous deadline: June 19, 2017) the selected companies will receive an e-mail with the instructions to send the company's logo, to pay the fee and to complete the registration procedure.

The registration fee for companies is set to € 800,00 and includes the participant kit (notebook, pen, badge, etc.), coffee breaks, receptions and social lunches organized for the event.

The deadline for the dispatch of the company's logo is June 27, 2017 (previous deadline: June 23, 2017) and the deadline for the fee payment and the registration is June 29, 2017.
